11th annual contest held Pow Wow Tuesday evening; vocalist selected for Minnesota Sings

Pre-teen, teen and adult Pow Wow Talent Contest winners for 2014 were named at the Tuesday evening, June 17, at the 11th annual competition held on the Mountain Lake City Park Bandstand. As well, in a new twist, the Mountain Lake contestant for the Minnesota Sings vocal competition was also selected by the trio of judges. The contest is sponsored by the Mountain Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.; the winners earning Chamber Bucks.

Competing in the pre-teen category were Anika Fast with the vocal solo, “Let It Go,” from the Disney movie, “Frozen,” and the dancing sisters, Ellie and Leah Bennett, presenting their dance routine to “Azento.” Judges declared a first-place tie between the two acts in the category, and each were recognized as the winners.

Four acts competed in the teen division. Rebecca Dose was selected a the top performer. She played the keyboard and sang a vocal solo to “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles. Second place went to Bailey Freitag for her vocal solo, ‘Put Your Record On” by Corinne Bailey Rae.  Other teen acts included Paige Riihl’s vocal solo to “Let It Go” and the vocal duet of Lydia Hildebrandt and Signey Stoesz on Abba’s “Mama Mia.”

There were a total of seven adult acts. Taking first was the string quartet composed of Dave Stillwell, Dr. Jeff Taber, Courtney Ryberg and Logan Ryberg presenting “The Pachelbel Canonball.” Rachelle Adrian was second with the vocal solo, “Even Though” by Norah Jones from the musical, “I Love You Because” and Philip Khemphomma’s vocal solo, “Who Are You?” by Carrie Underwood earned him third-place honors. Additional adult performers included the vocal duet of Heather Fredericksen and Petra Nelson, accompanied on guitar by Nelson, to “Temporary Home;” Brianna Wolf’s vocal solo to “So Small;” the Bailey Freitag and Nick Jones vocal duet to an original song by Jones, “The Haze” and the vocal solo, “See You Tonight,” by Ryan Fredericksen.

Advancing from Mountain Lake to the Minnesota Sings contest will be Rachelle Adrian with “”Even Though.” Minnesota Sings is a contest for amateur singers ranging in age from 15 to 25 (soloists, no groups). Each city winner (winner must hail from the city they represent) advances to compete in “Minnesota Sings 2014.” Cash prizes for “Minnesota Sings” are $2,500 for first-place, $1,000 for second-place and $500 for third-place. Competition will include 60 city winners vying for Minnesota Sings Champion 2014. Minnesota Sings i produced by Experience Shows, Incorporated.
