Moves on to Region 8 contest Thursday
Mountain Lake Public High School’s (MLHS) Senior High Knowledge Bowl Team #1 (Christian Pfeiffer, Daniel harder, Hamlet Tanyavong, Reece Englund and Caleb Rempel) performed to championship status in the Region 8 Sub-Regional contest, held Tuesday, March 11, at Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall (SMSU). Coming in second was Springfield Public High School’s Team #2 and third went to Marshall Public High School Team #1. These teams received trophies, along with medals awarded to each team member.
The top 28 teams advance to the Region 8 Regional Event tomorrow (Thursday, March 13), again at SMSU.
Also participating from MLHS was Team #2 (Anna Engstrom, Sam Xayanurom, Sam Hirsch, Julian Jung and Rebekah Klassen).
In addition to the teams from MLHS, participating districts included Cedar Mountain, Edgerton, Fulda, Lakeview, Marshall, Minneota, Pipestone, Red Rock Central, Redwood Area, Springfield, Tracy, Wabasso, Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Worthington.
A total of 46 teams participated in the event. During the contest, teams of students in grades 7-12 competed in a written round consisting of 60 questions, and four oral rounds of 45 questions each.
Questions tested the students’ recall, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Questions asked were inter-disciplinary, including American history, world history, government, current events, economics and law, geography, literature, English, mathematics, physical science, life science, earth science, health and psychology, art and music and general knowledge of Minnesota.
Teams raced against each other to be the first to “buzz in” and answer the question correctly, which resulted in very intense competition.
