MSHSL makes changes for one fall, one spring sport

Districts to be created for football; fourth class added for softball

Following today’s (Thursday, January 23, 2014) meeting of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) board of directors, the announcement was made that changes will be made to one fall sport – football – as well as in one spring sport – softball.

Working to cut down on long travel times to football competitors, the state’s football teams will be placed into district groups of 16 or 18 teams, beginning in the 2015 season. Keys on how the districts will be based include, according to the MSHSL: school size, geography, “like schools” and strength of programs. This arranging of teams into districts will make it easier for activities directors to schedule better, more equal match ups, beyond what a conference arrangement did in the past.

The change for softball in the spring sports season is the addition of a fourth class in  the state tournament. This will start with the 2016 season.
