Mountain Lake Area Wolverines boys basketball head coach Shawn Naas got his 300th career head coaching “W” tonight (Thursday, January 9), his varsity squad defeating the Adrian Dragons on the Mountain Lake hard-court, 86 to 55. The win leaves the Wolverines’ won/lost record unblemished.

Naas is currently in his 23rd year of teaching and coaching at Mountain Lake Public School. He graduated from high school in McVille, North Dakota and from college at the University of Minnesota-Crookston and from Bemidji State University in 1991. Naas graduated with a double major in teaching Social Studies and Physical Education. As a member of the U of M-Crookston’s Golden Eagles men’s basketball team, Naas was on the 1985-1986 team that won the Minnesota Community College Conference Title and advanced to the Region 13 Tourney, and finished runner-up, just one game shy of National Junior College Tournament. As a team member, he was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He and his wife Kim are the parents of two daughters, Taylor and Brooke.

Coach Naas made back-to-back Class A State Boys Basketball Tournament trips in 2012 and 2013 with the teams he was coaching. In 2012, the team advanced as Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin and in 2013 as Mountain Lake Area, combining players from Mountain Lake Public High School and Mountain Lake Christian.
