Cobra wrestlers opened season at Glencoe/Silver Lake Tourney

Brett Willaby, Alex Borsgard compete to titles; team as nine placewinners

WINDOM/MOUNTAIN LAKE (W/ML) Cobra wrestlers opened their 2016-2017 season last Thursday, December 3, at the Don Hall Tourney at Glencoe/Silver Lake. A pair of Cobras wrestled to champion. Freshman Brett Willaby claimed the 113-pount title going 3-0. In the final match, he defeated Keon Naranjo of LeSueur-Henderson with a 6-3 decision. The team’s other championship came at 138 pounds, earned by sophomore Alex Borsgard. Borsgard went 2-0 in the tourney, claiming a 10-2 major decision in the finals over Hayden Stensland of Zumbrota-Mazeppa. W/ML also had a pair or runners-up. Kade Sammons was second at 120, losing in the finals in a 5-0 decision to Jorje Hernandez of LeSueur-Henderson. Sophomore Zach Spinks wrestled to second at 132, losing by a 13-6 decision in the finals to Zack Holtz of Kimball. Cobra senior Evan Wiens finished third at 145, with a 10-6 win over Joseph Donnay of Kimball – and picked up his 75th career win in that match. Four-place finishers were Hunter Ekstrom at 126, Yanick Tade at 152 and Jesse Jepsen at 160. Placing fifth was Jabari Carlton at 195. These nine placewinners paced W/ML to a fourth-place team finish, compiling 110 points en route. Zumbrota-Mazeppa won the team title with 193 points. Next up is the Cobra Triangular on Thursday, December 8, at Mountain Lake. First up for W/ML is Luverne at 6:15 p.m., followed by Worthington. On Saturday, December 10, the team will compete at the Jackson County Central Tournament.
