The Mountain Lake Public School (MLPS) School Board staffed up, filling holes in the school’s support staff.

Hired as paraprofessionals were Tammy Watkins, Colleen Johnson and Brianna Friesen.

Returning to the custodial staff is Bryce Bregel.

Recognized as a volunteer football coach was Dylan Oeltjenbruns.

Paul Metcalf “officially” leaves the school district’s staff

Iconic elementary physical education and social studies teacher, as well as cross country, boys basketball and track and field coach Paul Metcalf has now “officially” left the school district’s staff.

The school board accepted the 70-year-old’s resignation as head boys and girls track and field coach during its Monday meeting, closing the book on a storied teaching and coaching career at MLPS – the only school Metcalf ever served during his professional tenure.

He received thanks for his years of service.

In other business

+ Heard a report from the Building Committee. MLPS School Board Vice-Chair, and Building Committee Chair, Tim Swoboda noted that the committee is making good progress and is trying to get firm budget numbers on proposals. Members of the MLPS Building Committee, in addition to Swoboda, include its Vice-Chair, Tom Appel, along with Cheri Hanson, Jerry Haberman, Bruce Swanson, Bryan Bargen, Vern Peterson, Shawn Naas and John Carrison. + Increased starting paraprofessional wage to $11.50, and also increased substitute para rate of pay to $11 per hour.

+ Approved an additional $1,500 to the district’s food service budget for an increase in labor costs.

+ Approved the lease agreement between MLPS (Independent School District #173) and Heartland Community Action (Head Start building) for August 2016 to July 2017 at $200 per month.

+ Approved lane change for a faculty member.

+ Approved an open enrollment.

+ Approved donations to the school district.

+ Discussed the levy proposal and certification schedule for payable 2017. Learned that both Health and Safety (at $114,000) and Operating Fund (at $165,000) have both overspent. Set the levy hearing for Monday, December 12 and the certification hearing for Monday, December 19, both in Room #1 in the high school, beginning at 6 p.m. each evening.

+ Approved the first read of revisions to school district and school board policies.

  • Included in this addendum are policy updates beginning with the most recent 2016 versions listed by the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA)
  • At the June 27, 2016 school board meeting, the board of directors rescheduled both the July and August regular school board meetings from 6 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in order to devote time to reviewing policies.
  • In order to comply with timelines established by the school board, internet access found on the district’s website to the policy revisions has been created for school board members to review policy revisions.
  • Board members were given instructions on how to access these revisions at this board meeting.
  • All of the MSBA’s 2016 updates have been reviewed. MLPS Superintendent Bill Strom submitted all of these updates to the school board at the Monday evening meeting for thlel first review.
  • Adoption of the 2016 policy updates is expected to occur at the Monday, September 19 regular monthly school board meeting.
  • There may be policies that require additional time to discuss and review, and will then be adopted at the regular board meeting on Monday, October 17.
