MLPS School Board holds Friday morning special meeting

Accepts resignation of Adam Bibbs, hires Luke Winger as phy ed teacher/athletic director

At a Friday morning, August 5 special meeting of the Mountain Lake Public School (MLPS) School Board, members accepted a resignation to open up a position on staff – and then approved a hiring to fill that open spot.

Board members accepted the resignation of Adam Bibbs, elementary physical education teacher and athletic director, and hired Luke Winger to fill that open staff position. Winger was hired at BA Step 5, along with an athletic stipend of $6,000 and an event stipend of $50.

Following interviews on Friday, July 29 and Monday, August 1, led by Superintendent Bill Strom, Elementary Principal Karl Wassman and High School Principal Michelle Larson on the interview team, along with Ruth Cole, consultant, Winger was introduced as the best candidate for the dual position.

Winter is a Minnesota and North Carolina-licensed and certified physical education teacher. He has international and multicultural teaching experience, having taught phy ed to students in grades kindergarten-to-eight from 12 nations, while in Beijing, China for four years, from 2012 to the present. He also taught Drama and Character Education in China. Additionally, as a top-level cycling coach and lifelong athlete, Winger added a cycling elective to the school.

His other attributes include serving as head Nordic ski coach at Blaine High School from 1999-2002, sharing on character education issues as a speaker, performing as a juggler in four countries and, from 2009-2012, coaching the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) Collegiate National Championship Cycling Team from Lees-McRae College – the Bobcats – of Banner Elk, North Carolina, as well as working as an assistant Director of Admissions at the college.

Winger has a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and a Minor in Performance Arts Studies.

He is married, and the couple has three children.
